2019 Hyundai Sonata Safety Ratings

2020 Hyundai Sonata

The new Hyundai Sonata for sale at Suntrup Hyundai South in St. Louis gets top safety marks from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and a Top Safety Pick+ rating the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). What are the details on these Hyundai Sonata safety ratings that give area drivers the peace of mind they’re looking for on the road when it comes to growing families, and active lifestyles? Get the specs below.

Hyundai Sonata NHTSA Rating

The NHTSA enforces vehicle performance standards and partnerships with states and local governments. In other words, they’re responsible for keeping people safe on American roadways. Every year, the NHTSA reduces deaths, injuries, and economic losses from car accidents by conducting rigorous safety tests on most cars driven in the U.S. These tests cover safety in the following areas:

  • Frontal crash
  • Side Crash
  • Rollover

The 2019 Hyundai Sonata got a 5-star overall rating from the NHTSA, with 5-star ratings in both front crash tests and side crash tests, and a 4-star rating in rollover crash tests.

Hyundai Sonata IIHS Rating

Differing slightly from the NHTSA, the IIHS is an independent, nonprofit scientific and educational organization dedicated to reducing the losses — deaths, injuries, and property damage — from motor vehicle crashes. As an institute existing apart from government, IIHS has a more granular approach to its testing, that includes a number of tests in categories of crashworthiness, along with crash avoidance and mitigation:

  • Small overlap front: driver-side
  • Small overlap front: passenger side
  • Moderate overlap front
  • Side
  • Roof strength
  • Head restraints & seats
  • Headlights
  • Front crash prevention

The 2019 Sonata received nearly perfect marks across all categories here, while its optional front crash prevention system earned a Superior mark. Together, these tests placed the new Sonata as a Top Safety Pick+, the top award from the IIHS.
