Hyundai Key Fob Battery Replacement

Man opening car with key fob

Every new Hyundai on the St Louis roads today has a Hyundai key fob, which lets you remotely lock, unlock, and sometimes even start your car. If you’re running in trouble with your key fob, you may need to replace the battery. Fortunately, replacing the battery in your Hyundai key fob is easy as long as you follow the correct steps! The service team at Suntrup Hyundai South has everything you need to know on how to change the battery in a Hyundai key fob in the guide below.

How to Open a Hyundai Key Fob & Replace the Battery

The first step in replacing your key fob battery is to open the key fob itself. While every model has a slightly different key fob, they’re generally the same design and can be opened using the same few steps.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Open a Hyundai Key Fob

  1. There should be a metal tab or button on your key fob that holds a metal key. Press and hold the metal tab to release the metal key, then use the key to open up the back cover on your key fob by inserting the key into the tiny opening and turning it in either direction.
  2. Older Hyundai models have a key fob with a small notch along the side. You can easily pry open the key fob at the notch using a coni or flat-blade screwdriver, but be careful!

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Replace a Hyundai Key Fob Battery

  1. Once the key fob is open, lift up the circuit board to reveal the battery. Take note of how the battery is positioned inside the key fob before you remove it since you’ll have to replace it in the same position.
  2. Most of the Hyundai key fobs require a CR2032 battery, which you can find at hardware or auto stores around Jefferson County, but you should still confirm in your owner’s manual the type of battery to use. You can easily order the battery you need at our parts store
  3. Carefully place the new battery inside the key fob, making sure that it’s making contact with all the connections.
  4. Replace the metal key, if there is one, once the key fob is put back together.

How to Program a Hyundai Key Fob

Once you’ve replaced the battery in your key fob, you’ll need to program it to your vehicle. Fortunately, this too is an easy process! Just follow these three steps:

  1. Get inside your Hyundai, and close the doors.
  2. Using your key, turn your Hyundai to the “ACC” (accessory) position on your ignition.
  3. Hold the “open” or “unlock” button on the key fob until your car lights flashes.

If you test the key and find that it isn’t working properly, reopen the case, and make sure that the battery has been placed in correctly and is touching the connections. Once you’ve made sure everything has been placed properly, replace the back case, and reprogram the key fob again.
